Why are so many Christian evangelicals/fundamentalists/Nationalists also anthropogenic climate change deniers?
More broadly, why are they okay with destroying "God's green Earth"?
- Dominionism over custodianship.
- Most evangelicals are entirely scientifically illiterate and are thereby susceptible to the propaganda of anti-science grifters, creationist preachers, corporate liars (PR departments), conspiracy theorists and "Christian" politicians, especially if the arguments of these people are couched in terms of fighting against some "evil," such as abortion, "wokeness" or secular authority.
- Earth systems science, which incorporates atmospherics and biogeochemical cycles, tacitly involves accepting an old Earth, and for many religious extremists, this is beyond the pale. If science is "wrong" about evolution, then it might also be wrong about the Earth's other natural processes, including climate change, and by extension anthropogenic climate change must likewise be a "sham".
- "God chose Trump," so if he says that climate change is a sham, then it must be. 80% of white evangelicals reportedly voted for Trump in the 2024 election.
- These same "Christians" often support policies that benefit corporations and the super-rich while punishing and criminalizing the poor, the vulnerable and the marginalized. They claim to follow Christ while rejecting the moral teachings of the Gospel. It's a small step to then viewing the suffering of the poor as having a redemptive value and seeing it as something that they deserve because they didn't do enough for the system. The rule of corporations and money is thereby sanctified by the very people who claim as their Lord and Savior the person who preached and did the very opposite of what these "believers" are condoning.
- Being inclined to worship Trump's wealth more than the Gospel and being okay with Musk's cruelty toward impoverished foreigners, these "Christians" will also tend to view the Earth itself as an inexhaustible resource to exploit and plunder (otherwise, why would God give it to us? Besides, Trump tells us that climate change isn't real anyway, and we know that Trump is telling the truth because God told us so. Therefore, the Earth can be pillaged to no end and pollution and ecocide are no big deal).
- Since they've been brainwashed to think along broadly corporatist lines, these "Christians" also believe that government intervention to help the environment is "socialism" and "tyranny" that takes away from God given freedoms.
- Opposition to Liberation Theology; in favor of Protestant evangelism that preaches obedience to authority. Conflation of peasant and worker rights movements with "communism". Christian evangelism used as a psyop against Latin American movements during the Cold War.
- Christian evangelism has long been a capitalist, or rather corporatist, construct, with vast amounts of money flowing into various foundations and think tanks that combine calls for deregulation and the promotion of "Christian values," plus coordination between conservative religious foundations and corporatist ones. The corporations and wealthy individuals (including energy companies and donors linked to the energy sector) help to propel Christian nationalist propaganda onto the national stage, thereby allowing it to shape government policy. The Christians get their single voter issues catered to (such as abortion) and turn out to vote for candidates who defend the same corporate interests that are polluting the planet and driving up its average temperature.
A moment's thought will reveal how imbecilic this whole arrangement is from a rational functional standpoint. Even from a purely religious/theological standpoint, it's stupid beyond belief. But it does have a functionality of its own, and the religious fundamentalist mind works in peculiar ways - ways that are (by design) to the benefit of the corporate faction within the right-wing machine. As for the corporate leaders and investors, they don't need to be believers. They just need to benefit from having a gigantic single issue voting bloc that they can tap into come election time.
